Von Steuben School Timeline of Events


October 24, 1928 Chicago Board of Education authorized a new junior high school to be built on the site bounded by Carmen, Kimball, the river and Christiana Avenues.
December 11, 1928 Appropriation of $2,295,00 was made.
August 1929 Building permit was issued to Architect P. Gerhardt. The original dimensions of the building were to be 239' by 406' and the address assigned was 5031-5039 North Kimball Avenue.
July 23, 1930 Teachers and pupils from Hibbard Jr. High School were transferred to Von Steuben Jr. High School.
September 2, 1930 Opened as a junior high school with a seating capacity of 2500 students. A principal was assigned.
July 26, 1933 Became a senior high school under a separate principal. 7th and 8th grade pupils from Hibbard, Peterson and Budlong schools were sent to Von Steuben to be incorporated as an elementary unit under a separate principal.
September 1936 Became a full senior high school. Elementary grades were returned to their own schools.
1952-1959 Branch of Peterson School.
September 1959 Grades 7 and 8 (upper grade center) from Solomon, Peterson and Hibbard Schools were added under the jurisdiction of the high school principle.
March 23, 1965 Marianna Von Poven of Lombard Illinois presented to Von Steuben High School an oil painting, framed and entitled "General Von Steuben" by Franz Victor Holtz, Berlin. (Canvas size 90x83)
